Flags of Civil War South Carolina, by Glenn Dedmondt. Ever since Glenn asked me to provide a review of this book for the publishers, I've been waiting for it to come out. It's a great book! S.C. produced some of the most beautiful flags of the war. Click on the amazon.com logo to see the cover, page samples, and order it from amazon.com.

The Museum of the Confederacy has published a book listing all the flags in their collection. It is entitled Colours of the Gray It contains lots of pictures, both black and white, plus information on types of Confederate flags. It's sure to become one of the favourite books among Confederate flag enthusiasts and is only $17.95! You can obtain a copy of the book by calling the museum's gift shop, The Haversack, or contact the Haversack at the museum's website http://www.moc.org.

Crute, Joseph H., Jr., Emblems of Southern Valor; The Battle Flags of the Confederacy, Louisville: Harmony House, 1990. Excellent art renderings of flags with unit histories.

Sumrall, Alan K., Battle Flags of Texans in the Confederacy, Austin: Eakin Press, 1995. Helpful in many ways; unique illustrations. A fine work. See the links page for his website and more on his book.

Echoes of Glory; Arms and Equipment of the Confederacy, Alexandria: Time-Life Books. All flag entries are photographs of the actual flags, which is terrific, but they do not give the flag dimensions!

PLEASE NOTE: The two following entries by Katcher & Scollins are now available in a single volume, along with their book on Union flags of the War Between the States. You can view the cover and order the book from amazon.com by clicking on the amazon.com logo. It'a entitled Flags of the Civil War.

Katcher, Scollins, Flags of the American Civil War 1: Confederate, Men-At-Arms Series, no. 252, London: Osprey Publishing, Ltd., 1992. A must have. Very affordable and packed with detailed information.

Cannon, Devereaux D., Jr., The Flags of the Confederacy; An Illustrated History, Memphis: St. Lukes Press, 1988. A work that has become a standard reference for many. Several of the web links have gotten their information from this work.

Wates, Wylma A., A Flag Worthy of Your State and People, The History of the South Carolina State Flag, Columbia, South Carolina Department of Archives & History, 1990. See my review of this book.

Confederate Flags in the Georgia State Capitol Collection, Ed.: Paul Ellington, Pub.: Office of Secretary of State Max Cleland, paperback, heavy glossy stock cover, glossy pages, pages: 72, flags: 52 flags of various commands, clear color photographs, each flag accompanied by company or regimental history, construction measurements and material notes, many period photos, drawings, associated artifacts. Overall effect spoiled by the inclusion of a Federal flag of Reconstruction period (p. 65). Other than that, a very excellent work, very informative, and very interestingly written.
